A Photo Essay: Flying to Milford Sound (The most insanely beautiful journey you will ever take)

When visiting New Zealand, the list of spectacular places to try and squeeze into your trip will be never ending.

There are hundreds of lists, countdowns, blogs and tourism sites which debate the "must sees" of this stunning corner of the world. Whilst these all vary, the one thing any list worth its socks will feature is the Milford Sound. It has won many titles such as "Top Tourist Destination" several years running, and its really not hard to see why.

And while the Sounds are breathtaking in themselves, the journey to get to them is spellbinding, especially if you choose to go by Air.

Prepare to be amazed, and be warned at the end of this you may end up booking your own flight over Fjordlands.

Out tiny little plane.
Flying over the Southern Alps
View of Wanaka from the air
How stunning is this?!?!?!?!
Mountain Range View
A bright blue lake high up in the mountains
And another one...

USEFUL INFO

  • We flew with Glenorchy Air which for a return flight and boat journey at the Sounds was $445 per person.
  • This costs just a little over double than getting the bus to Milford Sound, however, it takes a fraction of the time and as you have just seen, the views are pretty spectacular.
  • Flights are weather dependant and as the weather at the sounds is unpredictable at best, be prepared for delays and cancelations. Whenever the flights are delayed or cancelled, the company reschedule it for the following day due to this I would advise not booking the flight on your final day in Queenstown, incase it needs to be rescheduled.
